Preserving Afghanistan’s musical heritage

This series will aim to preserve Afghanistan’s musical heritage while there is a ban on music in Afghanistan. Through personal testimonies, a curated playlist, and carefully selected literature, this series takes a look at how Afghanistan’s musical heritage has been shaped, silenced, and reimagined in the face of change.

From the impact of the Taliban’s ban on music to the voices of artists keeping traditions alive in exile, this series aims to document history while inspiring dialogue about the future of Afghanistan’s musical heritage.

The word echoes carries both memory and resilience. It reflects sounds that may fade but never fully disappear, just as Afghanistan’s music, though silenced by bans and displacement, continues to resonate across borders and generations.

This is more than storytelling. This is a living archive and a reminder that even when silenced, the echoes can be heard from around the world.
